OLFACTORY INTERACTION ( draft )

چکیده

1 Introduction In a modern western culture dominated by visual and auditory perception, olfaction is commonly regarded as a minor sensory modality. Yet, scents are extremely evocative; they can also shift attention, add novelty, enhance mental state and add presence. And, as an ambient or peripheral medium [1], olfaction does not require manipulation or eye contact. This chapter explores the sense of smell as an alternative interaction channel with, or mediated by, computers. Supporting this thrust are recent scientific breakthroughs in olfactory reception, technological advances in sensor-based machine olfaction, and emerging commercial ventures in olfactory displays. These three areas will now be reviewed.

Penguins reduced olfactory receptor genes common to other waterbirds

The sense of smell, or olfaction, is fundamental in the life of animals. However, penguins (Aves: Sphenisciformes) possess relatively small olfactory bulbs compared with most other waterbirds such as Procellariiformes and Gaviiformes. To test whether penguins have a reduced reliance on olfaction, we analyzed the draft genome sequences of the two penguins, which diverged at the origin of the ord...

Characterization of Squamate Olfactory Receptor Genes and Their Transcripts by the High-Throughput Sequencing Approach

The olfactory receptor (OR) genes represent the largest multigene family in the genome of terrestrial vertebrates. Here, the high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach was applied to characterization of OR gene repertoires in the green anole lizard Anolis carolinensis and the Japanese four-lined ratsnake Elaphe quadrivirgata. Tagged polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products amplif...

Papaya Dieback in Malaysia: A StepTowards A New Insight of Disease Resistance

A recently published article describing the draft genome of Erwiniamallotivora BT-Mardi (1), the causal pathogen of papaya dieback infection in Peninsular Malaysia, hassignificant potential to overcome and reduce the effect of this vulnerable crop (2). The authors found that the draft genome sequenceis approximately 4824 kbp and the G+C content of the genomewas 52-54%, which is very similarto t...

Histochemical study of the olfactory rosette of Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758)

The distribution and localization of acid and neutral mucins in various cells lining the olfactory epithelium of Cyprinus carpio have been studied histochemically by employing the PAS-AB technique. Variations in the localization of protein in different cells lining the olfactory epithelium have been correlated with the functional significance of the region concerned. Intense localization of t...
